I want to start on a serious note and remind all readers that comments here are moderated and anything that is potentially libelous will be deleted. Someone wrote an email asking why I had not published his comment, and I replied because it included a statement alleging one of the blokes depicted on my blog was involved in illegal activity.

I'm not about to be sued for republishing unsourced and anonymous comments saying that someone engages in criminal behavior. In many jurisdictions, including the United States, there is a concept in law called defamation per se (defined here) which include allegations of criminality and the result can be onerous.

A recent test case worked its way through the California court system involving exactly this issue -- anonymous comments posted on a blog about someone engaged in supposed illegal behavior and the blogger was sued. British defamation law is even stricter, with the burden of proof on the person being sued.

If I republish someone's comment without verifying the truth of allegations, I could be on the receiving end of an ugly lawsuit. I'm not interested in that, thank you very much, so any comment that could be construed as defamatory will be deleted. If you want to trash someone in print, do that elsewhere, please. It's not welcome here.
